Winter 2017 Kitchen Design Trends

Brrrr! Winter is here and it is cold.  Lots of people try to do indoor projects in winter.  The most popular? Kitchens and baths of course. Kitchens remodels are exciting to do.  They change the way you live. You start hanging out more in the kitchen, you cook comfort foods and avoid unhealthy meals out, and you find time to connect with friends and family.  But a great kitchen remodel starts with a good team: the contractor & the designer.

1.) What is the most popular kitchen design style nowadays?

What makes a style of a kitchen is not just the design layout, but the right selection of materials like tile backsplash, flooring, hardware, lighting, paint, countertops, etc.  Every single one of those materials plays an important role in defining the style of a kitchen.  Which bring us to the answer of the question: Contemporary style is still the most popular kitchen design style.

2.) Combining raw materials with modern finishes.

Right now, we are seeing a lot of raw materials used in conjunction with very modern materials like chrome or nickel hardware.  The shaker cabinet door style is still in high demand as a timeless American classic style. It pairs well when used with very modern materials and will be a timeless, transitional door. White cabinets are still in style combined with a gray or mushroom tone island. As for countertops, granite is still the most in demand.  But, trends are shifting. Quartz surfaces are quickly becoming as popular as granite.  Quartz is made from real crystal quartz combined with pigmented epoxy to simulate the real material look of granite and marble.  It is more durable than natural materials, but can be a bit higher in price.  The most known & popular: Caesarstone. http://www.caesarstoneus.com

3.) Don’t let lighting be an afterthought.

Lighting is half of any design.  You must think ahead while still designing any space – particularly a kitchen. The most popular lighting trends in 2017 are the rustic, natural raw material lighting when added to a very modern setting. Pendants on top of islands and peninsulas remain a popular element.

Many kitchens now also feature installation of indirect lighting under the cabinets to give the work surfaces an infinite glow.  When planning the kitchen, be careful about lighting distribution.  It will definitely define the different corners – from island to sink, and prep area to breakfast nook.

With all that said, to bring a style to a kitchen can be challenging for the client without the support & help from a professional. Using a designer can help you define your clients’ styles and create a functional design that they will enjoy for years to come.
