For men, it all starts with the shower. We don’t take baths and while a shower-tub combo is great, it really is unnecessary. Likewise, for those looking to add a separate shower and tub, just know your male counterparts most likely won’t be using the tub.
As far as extra accessories to the showers, multiple shower heads are a terrific start. While a rainfall and handheld shower head is certainly unnecessary, it does make for a luxurious experience every time we step inside.
Additional, shower benches are great too. Quite often, we enjoy a long hot shower and who wants to stand for that long?
Extra Counter Space
While we don’t demand the world when it comes to counter space, men do have their needs as far as areas to rest their toothbrush, shaver or deodorant.
Unless you have a very small bathroom, do away with a pedestal sink. Not only do they offer little, if any, storage, but it leaves little room for your essential toiletries. Once you do add a large vanity with plenty of counter space, make sure there is enough room for the following accessories:
- Shaving Cream
If all the following items can fit on the surface at once, then you’re golden.
Good lighting can make all the difference in any room in the house, including the bathroom. When it comes to early morning showers or shaves, there is nothing worse than working in a poorly lit room. Natural sunlight is great, but more often than not, we use the bathroom when the sun sets or before sunrise. Therefore, whether you add LED light bulbs, an extra chandelier or recessed lights, men need a bathroom with plenty of lighting.

Plenty of Closed Storage
It should go without saying, but storage is a must. As I referenced above, while some of us would like to keep our everyday toiletries out all the time, the end result is clutter. Therefore, men need plenty of closed storage. As I referenced in The Perfect Bathroom For Her, women prefer open shelving. Open shelving, if organized, creates an open feel to what most likely is a small room. Bear in mind, I did say if organized.
Most men do not think about clutter. They do not worry about design or the appearance of the bathroom to the outside world. Nonetheless, we do know when things have to be put away. That is why I strongly advocate closed storage for men. It will keep the bathroom decluttered and please the wife at the same time.
I realize this sounds a little unconventional, but occasionally, your bathroom will not smell its greatest. While a match or open window can help, rarely do they do the trick. That is why it’s a good idea to add scented candles and other strong scents around the bathroom.
Keep in mind, there are a few terrific brands out there that really clear the air (for both men and women).
We love our significant others, but sometimes, especially in the bathroom, we need our space. If you’re lucky enough to fit two vanities or two separate sinks, make sure there is a clear dividing line. Both parties should know where they stand (figuratively speaking of course).
If either side needs more space (looking at you ladies), ask nicely, but don’t assume the other can provide it. Like I said, both men and women need their space and this couldn’t be more important in any other room.
Extra: Radiant Heated Floors
There is nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night only to experience the wrath of cold bathroom floors. OK, it may not be that bad, but until you experience heated floors in a bathroom, you don’t know what you’re missing. Stepping out of a shower onto warm, heated floors can turn even the worst days into a positive.
Men are simple. We don’t ask for much. All we want in our bathrooms are large showers, plenty of counter space, separation and good lighting. As long as we have these necessary items, we are as happy as can be.
