One of the many advantages Custom Contracting brings to clients is the ability to handle the demands of big remodeling projects. That’s why a recent two-story addition to the home of Drs. Randall McShine and Sherrie Zhang was right up our alley.
“The capabilities of our company make us a perfect fit for mid-to-large projects like this one,” said general manager Scott Blain. “We have administrative and managerial staff to help homeowners choose the right materials and appliances to fit their budget and other requirements. And we have a network of trusted professional partners to help with the challenging mechanical work that inevitably comes up, including product installations.”
Design/Build a Key Factor
Randall and Sherrie have lived in their colonial in southwest Lexington since 2003. They first found Custom Contracting on Qualified Remodeler’s “Top 500 Remodelers List.” They liked our website, had some good conversations with members of our staff and talked with a few of our satisfied customers.
One key factor that helped win over the couple was our design/build capabilities.
“Sometimes architects will draw you something that is very nice but very hard – or too expensive – to implement,” said Randall. “That’s a potential drawback of dealing with an architectural firm. We didn’t want to risk paying to have plans drawn up that ultimately were of no use.”
Randall and Sherrie came to us with some firm ideas for the addition. On the first floor, they wanted more space for the kitchen along with a guest room/study, laundry room and expanded bathroom. Upstairs, they aimed to expand the common bathroom and add a bathroom and walk-in closet to their master bedroom.
Keeping in mind their budget, vision and target square footage, Scott started the design work. Using his drawings, floor plan, photos and measurements, an architect was able to quickly put together the construction documents that would guide the project.
Almost Twice the Space
The new, reconfigured kitchen has almost twice the space of the original room. We installed gorgeous custom cherry cabinets and elegant granite countertops, both of which Randall and Sherrie picked out with the input of our designer, Nikki DeFelice.
“Besides assisting with the selections, Nikki was very helpful in producing a rendition so we could get a better idea of what the kitchen would look like,” said Sherrie. “It definitely would be tough to do a project like this without someone like her.”
One of Sherrie’s favorite parts of the addition is the laundry room, which has ample space for folding and hanging clothes. Also off of the living room is the study (with bathroom), which she uses as her home office.
On the second floor, we knocked down a dividing wall to merge the common bathroom with the master bathroom. The twin six-year-old daughters of Randall and Sherrie now share a common bathroom with a double sink and plenty of floor space.
Meanwhile, the master bedroom now opens into a generous walk-in closet as well as a grand bathroom with double sink vanity, soaking tub and large custom shower with bench.
“We wanted to have an addition that complemented the existing house in terms of design, accessories, lighting fixtures, etc.,” said Randall. “We’re very happy with the selections we made and the work that Custom did. Everything looks like it’s supposed to be there.”
Sticking to the Schedule
For such a big undertaking, the McShine/Zhang project went quite smoothly. The home is only 17 years old, which makes electrical and plumbing work a lot easier. In addition, the home was often vacant – Randall and Sherrie work regular business hours, and their kids were with family in China for about half of the project.
Randall praised the work of Bryan Lamoureux, who served as lead carpenter: “Bryan listened to the concerns we had and the things we were unsure about. He was always happy to explain everything that was going on. It was great working with him.”
Perhaps most importantly to Randall and Sherrie, we completed the project on schedule. “We wanted to get our lives back to normal as soon as possible; Custom was right on target with their timeline,” said Sherrie. “And the people they have onsite and in their office made sure the process was a lot less stressful for us.”
