Mini-Split Systems: Good Things in Small Packages

Do you have a room in your house that’s too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer? A ductless, or mini-split, system might be the perfect solution.

Mini-splits offer heating and air conditioning in one compact package. The system typically consists of a wall-mounted indoor unit, a compressor that sits outside the home and refrigerant lines connecting the two. Multiple indoor units can be connected to one compressor.

Mini-splits can be installed in homes without existing ductwork, such as those with baseboard heat or radiators. They’re also ideal for rooms that are inadequately heated or cooled, finished basements with excessive humidity or additions in which adding ductwork would be cost-prohibitive.

The advantages of mini-split systems include:

  • Only a small hole in an outdoor wall is required for installation.
  • They can be installed on the wall or sometimes recessed in a ceiling, making them less conspicuous than window A/C units.
  • They’re much quieter than window A/C units as well.
  • They’re energy-efficient; according to ENERGY STAR, they “use more sophisticated compressors and fans that can adjust speeds to save energy,” thus “cutting cooling costs by 30% compared to conventional room air conditioners.”
  • ENERGY STAR certified mini-splits are eligible for rebates from some local utilities.

Possible downsides of mini-splits? The upfront cost may exceed what you’re looking to spend, even though the long-term savings will help offset the investment. For some, a mini-split hanging from the wall may not match your design aesthetic. And maintenance — in the form of monthly cleaning of each unit’s filter — is a must if you want to optimize performance and longevity of the system.

More and more homeowners, however, are deciding that the pros of a mini-split system are too strong to resist. If you’d like to learn more about having one installed, please contact Custom today.
